Maverick Dark West Sussex Trail Run
There are 3 distance options: 5K, 10K or 17K. We opted for the 17K.
In hindsight, I think that the 10K would have been more enjoyable. Everyone sets off at the same time, but a lot of the first Mile was single file and walking.
Atmosphere and amenities
There’s a ‘buzzy’ atmosphere in the Race Village with music and a few stalls with Brownies and treats available. Plenty of toilets.
There is free parking, which is great, but it’s a bit of a walk from the Start/Finish, and there’s no bag drop, which meant that when we were done, we didn’t stop to enjoy the pizza van or bar as we were very cold and wet.
During the race
Around Mile 9, you wade through knee-deep Reed’s and water – I was in a right grump by then!
To be eco-friendly (brilliant), there are no cups available, and you should take your own hydration…an oversight on my part. I don’t like running with a pack, so I wasn’t able to have a drink.
Final Thoughts
For me, the fun of trail running is the wonderful views but as it’s dark, you can’t see anything. Obvious, really, but I didn’t get much enjoyment out of staring at my own feet for 2 hours, trying not to fall over. That’s just my experience. Others may enjoy it more than I did. No reflection on the Maverick Events Team. I’d love to have a go at some of their daytime runs.
