Review by Nick Carter

This is a race review of the Gosport 5k Summer Series 2nd race in 2024, from our very own Nick Carter.

Grab yourself a coffee, and enjoy Nick trying to summarise a rather wet event when the sun should be out and shining!

Gosport 5k Summer Series Race 2 – Tuesday 14th May, 2024.

In typical Gosport Summer Series fashion, it was cold, wet and windy for the start of Race 2 but warm and sunny as we finished with a beautiful sunset and a line of cruise ships setting sail for warmer climes. There is always a view to enjoy at Stokes Bay, whatever the weather.

Attendance and 1k Junior Fun Run

There were one or two really tasty youngsters in the main event who ran 15 minutes something but were made to work by the old war horse James Baker who came 3rd in 16 minutes flat. He’s remarkable and travels all the way from Chichester every race bless him.

Numbers were consistent and we even had one or two more juniors for the 1K fun run because rain doesn’t scare the youngsters and our sponsored junior, Annabeth Chaplin took the laurels as first girl home.

545ers at the Summer Series

Despite a dodgy hip, Eileen saw the Finish line and relived her youth, suddenly lighting the afterburners and finishing strongly.
Al Burgess showed us youngsters that we are still not worthy and Pea Atkinson fired a warning shot across Dad Paul’s bows with a PB…he’s coming for you Paul!

Fortunately, Bayside Cabin stayed open for us again and there were a few post run beers and pizzas consumed whilst awaiting the award ceremony in which the 545ers were well represented. Age group winners Mel Spence, Erika Tavener and Lynn Hughes all took gongs home…well Mel did.

Finally, those who support and Marshall these races make them popular and fun to be part of so thank you all for giving up your evening for us idiots.

See you at Race 3!

Need a little running company?

If anyone reading this needs a little company on their runs or is even contemplating starting, check out our training diary, which will give information on where and when we meet.

Until time, stay safe and if you see a 545er out for a run, say ‘Hi.’ We’re friendly if nothing else.
